Toor Dal


This is a popular dal in India. This dal has few names like Toor/ Tur/ Tuvar/ Arhar/ Yellow Dal/ Pigeon Pea Lentils. This recipe is really easy to make and goes really well with Phulkas/Roti or Pulao. This is widely prepared in most of the household and a comfort food for sure. This recipe teaches the easiest and yet the tastiest way of making toor dal.


  1. Wash and soak the dal for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Pressure cook the dal along with chopped onion , tomato, salt, turmeric and 1 tsp ghee for 4-5 Whistles. The dal should get mashed easily.
  3. Check the dal for thickness, if you want it thick, let it be and if you want it thin , then add some hot water according to requirement.
  4. In another pan, heat the ghee for tempering.
  5. Add the cumin seeds, garlic, curry leaves, red chili and wait till the garlic is golden brown..
  6. Add the tempering in the dal.
  7. Add some lemon juice and garnish with corainder leaves.
  8. This dal can be served with Hot Phulkas/ Rotis or Pulao.
