Tomato Rice


Tomato rice is also known tomato bath in Southern state of India. Tomato rice is worldwide famous, every region has its own version of tomato rice. This is perfect for lunch box because it is quick, simple and easy to cook. Tomato rice can be done with left over rice or freshly cooked rice. This tomato rice is made with tomato puree sauted with aromatic spices and then added to cooked rice, which tastes yummy. Kids love to eat it because of its colour and tangy taste.


  1. Wash and soak basmati rice for 10 min, and pressure cook it for 3 whistles in medium flame with required amount of water.After cooking of rice, keep it aside.
  2. Next, heat the oil in a pan add mustard seeds, when they splutter add chana dal, urad dal, cinnamon stick, clove, cumin seeds, fennel seeds.
  3. After that add onions, curry leaves, green chilies and fry them until the onions turn into golden brown color.
  4. Next add chopped tomatoes and sauté it until it turns to soft and juicy.
  5. Next add red chili powder, turmeric, and garam masala, salt and stir it to fry for a minute.
  6. After that add some water and bring it to boil.
  7. Once the tomato puree starts boiling, add the cooked rice and mix it gently on a low flame.
  8. Stir and fry the rice with tomato masala and lastly add chopped coriander leaves and cook it for 3-4 min for the rice to absorb the flavors of aromatic spices.
  9. Now transfer it into a bowl and serve it.
  10. Now the tasty and spicy tomato rice is ready. Serve it hot with raita or korma.
