Moong Dal Halwa is a delicacy of the state of Rajasthan, North India. It is a rich, creamy and pudding-like dessert. Made with split yellow moong dal, this is a popular and delicious dessert for the winter months. This is one of the sweets that you can’t stop eating, but making this halwa will also be very intesrting and simple. As the chilly winters make their way through our doors, the fantasy of the sweet, rich and warm Moong Dal Halwa torments our hearts. Well, time to make that come true with this simple few steps recipe.


  1. Soak the moong dal in enough water overnight or for 4-5 hours
  2. Drain and then grind the moong dal to a smooth paste with ¼ to 1/3 cup water
  3. Melt ghee in a nonstick pan
  4. Add ground moong dal and stir well
  5. Keep on stirring the halwa on low flame or medium flame until the raw smell goes away from moong
  6. The halwa first is pasty, then starts getting lumpy and then stars breaking down and getting separated with the fat releasing from the sides.
  7. Break the lumps while stirring
  8. Meanwhile when halwa is cooking, take another pan or kadai, add milk, water and sugar in it.
  9. Keep this pan on the stove top on low to medium flame.
  10. Stir it so that sugar dissolves.
  11. Heat this milk water sugar mixture till it comes to a boil point
  12. The moong dal mixture should reach a granular consistency before you add the hot milk mixture. The color should become light golden.
  13. When milk mixture comes to a boil, add it to the fried moong lentils
  14. Stir well. Simmer and cook
  15. The liquid should get absorbed and once again you will see the ghee getting separated
  16. Lastly add cardamom powder, chopped pista and raisins
  17. Garnish with some pista and serve hot
