Kala Chana/ Black Chana Sundal / Kadalai Sundal


Kala Chana Sundal are usually served in temples as Prasadam, you can also offer it God at home. It is also made during Ganesh Festival. It can be just had as a snack as well. Quick to make and yet tasty. If you are making for Prasadam, then usage of rock salt is recommended. Traditionally, this dish is made of Coconut oil, but in absence of that, peanut oil or regular refined oil also can be used.


  1. Wash and soak the kala chana in water for good 6-8 hours.
  2. Now after soaking, pressure cook the chana in water with some salt for 5-5 whistles, till they are completely cooked. It should get smashed easily.
  3. Heat Oil in a pan.
  4. Crackle the Mustard seeds.
  5. Add the urad dal. Wait till it gets browned.
  6. Add the green chili and curry leaves.
  7. Add the cooked Kala Chana.
  8. Saute the kala chana for 5 minutes in medium flame.
  9. Add the grated coconut and mix well.
  10. Add the salt and lemon juice.
  11. Kala chana sundal is ready to be served.
